I love vintage. It’s a fact. I make no excuses for my hair idol being Veronica Lake or that I have major appreciation for Lauren Bacall’s fantastic eyebrows. My favourite era’s are the 40’s and 50’s, hands down. I think the fashion and styling of that time are just phenomenal and like something out of a very glamorous fairy tale. So you can imagine how excited I was when I managed to get my hands on a couple of tickets to a vintage hair and make up masterclass. What a perfect way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
PinUps Hair and Makeup is a fairly new addition to the West End of Glasgow. Located in Ruthvern Lane, this hidden gem is like taking a step back in time. The salon is decked out in all things vintage. Furniture, hair styling tools and, completing the look, an authentic jukebox, which was unfortunately too big for me to try and swipe into my bag.
The masterclass was based on the 60’s and I have to admit it is a time I don’t know a lot about. But, head stylist, Charlie, showed off her knowledge, educating us all on all things 60’s. This lady is a glamorous fountain of knowledge and I could listen to her talk about vintage, all day.
I was luck enough to be chosen for the make up demonstration and I am sold on the 60’s make up. The heavy monochrome eye is right up my street and by keeping the lips pale, all the focus is on the eyes.
The hair was the signature 60’s beehive. I have really fine hair, which makes creating height all the more difficult. However, if you backcomb in smaller sections, with some hairspray to give the hair texture, the height created lasts a bit longer.
The outfit I chose yesterday for my challenge was my polka dot skirt and a purple/navy basic vest top from M&S. My pastel pink sandals, from ASOS, really pull the look together giving me the touch of vintage I was after. I love these sandals but it won’t be long until they go into hibernation for next Summer, so I am trying to wear them as much as I can!
Hope you all had a great weekend! Join me later in the week when I will do a run down of my OWOP work outfits for the week.
