The New Years Day dress

The New Years Day dress

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!  2015 has arrived and I hope you welcomed in  the New Year surrounded by some amazing people and copious amounts of food and alcohol.  This year we spent New Years Eve with some close friends and boogied until the wee hours.

Ever year, my massive clan gathers to celebrate the start of a New Year and to eat ourselves into another food coma.  Instead of a traditional steak pie, we make things interesting and pick a theme to wet our culinary appetite.  This year the theme is Italian gangster, so its only appropriate that I made a new dress for the occasion!

As you read in my November Swoons post I have been crushing over the Elisalex pattern, so I decided to bite the bullet and make this dress for the celebrations.  Usually, I just dive straight into making the final garment as I have a lack of patience; but, if my jacket course has taught me anything, it’s that well fitting clothes are worth the extra effort.  The Elisalex dress is very fitted at the waist so I made a toile of the bodice to make sure that the Princess seams were in the right place and the waist stopped at the correct position.  Luckily, I didn’t have to do a bust adjustment to the paper pattern, phew!  All I had to do was shorten the straps, which is a common problem I have with patterns.  But, it comes with the 5ft territory!

After taking a couple of inches off the shoulders getting my bodice to sit perfectly, I decided to cut my lovely fabric.  I purchased some beautiful blue viscose from the Atelier Brunette Facet, Attraction Collection.  I bought my fabric from the Guthrie Ghani website, which along with a stunning selection of fabrics has a quick and efficient delivery service.  I highly recommend taking a swatch around this website, you will not be disappointed.

Another issue I came across with the pattern was that I had to take about 5inches off the bottom of the skirt, taking it from an ankle length dress to falling just above my knees.  Again, these problems come with being 5ft not a lot, and usually have to alter the length of all skirts/dresses I make.

Dress: Elisalex Dress; Tights: Bebaroque; Shoes: Schuh and Custom Bonnie Bling Necklace

I love the way the bodice of this dress sits and luckily there was enough room for dessert!  I was going to get more pictures of me wearing the dress, but due to a very jolly night before and two particularly sore heads that morning, I wasn’t able to get any.

2014 has been an AMAZING year for me, I hope yours has been too!  It’s been a year of working hard and doing new things, this blog being one of the biggest leaps of faith.  Here’s to bigger and better in 2015! Hope 2015 is a belter for you all.

Love love,
